Condoms get most of the airtime when we talk about safer sex, but they’re not the only barrier you’ve got. Dams are great for any work where mouths and body fluids are in the mix. Used well, they cut your risk of STI and bloodborne virus (BBV) transmission without getting in the way of the booking. You can get dams for free or low-cost through sex worker organisations and sexual health clinics, and they’re also easy to find online if you need a bulk restock.

Dams

A dam (short for dental dam) is a thin rectangular sheet of latex or polyurethane that sits between your mouth and someone’s vulva or anus during oral sex. It stops direct contact, which lowers the risk of STI transmission. Dams come in different colours and flavours, and with or without lubricant already on them.
